University of Cincinnati junior Clay Amlung (Louisville, Ky./Saint Xavier HS) registered a career-best finish, tying for seventh place at 6-under 66-67-71=204 Tuesday during final-round play at the Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational at the Old Town Club in Winston-Salem, N.C.
It marks Amlung's first career top-10 finish at a collegiate event. His previous best result came at the rain-shortened Jim Rivers Intercollegiate last fall where he tied for 20th place at 1-over 145.
Amlung recorded a 1-over 71 Tuesday, amid more challenging weather conditions, to complete the Wake Forest event with par or better scores on 48 of the 54 holes, highlighted by an eagle and 10 birdies.
UC sophomore Sam Jean (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS) posted his third career top-30 finish, holding steady Tuesday to tie for 29th place at 1-over 68-72-71=211.
Other Bearcats' results included sophomore Mason Lenhart (Prospect, Ky./North Oldham HS) tying for 35th place at 2-over 66-69-77=212. Junior Nicolas Osterburg (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian HS) tying for 54th position at 6-over 71-73-72=216.
Redshirt freshman Jack Kunkel (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview HS) tied for 67th place at 9-over 73-76-70=219 in his first collegiate tournament.
Washington's Noah Woosley rallied to claim individual medalist honors at 15-under 66-66-63=195.
As a team, Cincinnati finished seventh in the 13-team field at 4-under 271-281-284=836. Washington earned the team title at 30-under 272-266-272=810.
// QUOTING HEAD COACH DOUG MARTIN
On recapping the team's performance at Wake Forest:
"There were a lot of positives to take away from this week. Clay Amlung had a great event. The only negative from the week was not playing better today when we faced adversity. The golf course was very challenging all day. But we will learn from it and come out better on the other side. It's a quick turnaround for us as we look forward to hosting the Bearcat Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at Coldstream Country Club."
