CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati men's soccer fell 3-1 to the visiting Memphis Tigers in a hard-fought American Athletic Conference (AAC) opener for both teams on Saturday night at Gettler Stadium.

The Bearcats (2-6, 0-1 AAC) fell behind early in the 16th minute when U of M (6-2, 1-0 AAC) got behind the UC defense for a score. Unable to cash in the equalizer before halftime and facing a 1-0 deficit to begin the second period, the Red & Black were dealt an unfortunate blow early in the half when they were whistled for a foul inside the box which the Tigers converted into a penalty-kick score during the 55th minute.

With UC chasing the game with about 35 minutes left in regulation, Memphis added on with a goal in the 59th minute to go up 3-0. The home team showed resiliency, getting within two scores on junior midfielder Shevon Stewart's (Kingston, Jamaica/St. George's College/Daytona State) second goal of the season – a tally off of feeds from Mason Volker (St. Leon, Ind./East Central) and Aerin West (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview) during the 61st minute to reduce the deficit to 3-1

The Bearcats tried to get back in the match late, but were unable to capitalize on any offensive advances, ultimately dropping the league contest to the streaking Tigers.

UC outshot U of M 15-14 and managed six tries on goal. Senior forward Rex Epps (Irmo, S.C./Dutch Fork/Army West Point) led the way with four shots, including two on target, while Stewart, senior defender Donovan Segree (Kingston, Jamaica/Jamaica College/Daytona State), and junior forward Creggton Charlton (Clarendon, Jamaica/Clarendon College/Daytona State) each had three tries. Junior goalkeeper Noah Lawrence (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Sacred Heart) registered a trio of saves to bring his season total to 27.
