EAST LANSING, Mich. – University of Cincinnati volleyball completed a sweep of Indiana State on Saturday to win the 2019 Auto-Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational.
Jordan Thompson was named the tournament MVP while Maria Mallon and Adria Oliver joined her on the all-tournament team.

• Mallon led the match with 20 kills on a .516 hitting percentage and nine digs
• Thompson had ten kills on .409 hitting with 14 digs and three blocks
• Armania Heckenmueller finished her good week with 38 assists and seven digs
• Oliver had a team-high four blocks and five kills while hitting .364

Set 1: UC 25-19
The Bearcats got out to an early lead with a kill from Mallon and two from Damjana Cabarkapa. Two more Mallon kills and one from Thompson made it an 8-3 advantage. The lead grew to 18-12 when Heckenmueller dropped in two kills, forcing a Indiana State timeout. Late kills by Cabarkapa and Karoline Fauske made it set point before an error gave UC the win
Set 2: UC 25-21
Once again UC came out strong, starting the set with a Mallon kill and following that with a Heckenmueller ace. Chrysanthi Stamatiou put together her own 3-0 streak with a block and two kills to take a 7-2 lead. The Sycamores put the deficit at four, but the Bearcats opened the lead back up with an Oliver, Mallon and Stametiou kill. Indiana State worked back to make it a 21-19 set before Mallon and Thompson kept the team in front with kills. The offense remained tough as kills from Stamatiou and Thompson ended the set.
Set 3: UC 25-11
It was all Bearcats in set three. The team went up 8-2 after 6-0 scoring run, brought in part by two Stamatiou aces and two Oliver kills. Mallon had three kills nearly in a row with only a kill by Thompson inbetween to break up her streak as UC surged ahead 14-5. The Bearcats reached twenty points quickly, leading 20-7. Indiana State was able to add in a few more points, but the final three would come from UC on an Oliver kill, Thompson ace and Mallon kill to complete the sweep.

UC makes the short trip to NKU next weekend for a tournament. They open with Notre Dame on Friday, September 13 at 3 p.m. On Saturday, UC will face Ball State at 10 a.m. and the host Norse at 7:30 p.m.
