UC's (1-2) second-half comeback hopes were cut short Friday night in a 2-1 loss to the visiting No. 10 Xavier Musketeers at historic Nippert Stadium.
In front of a sizeable crowd of 2,072 fans, the Bearcats (1-2) got behind 2-0 to the Musketeers (3-0) after one half of play. UC once again showed its resiliency, pulling within a goal in the 64th minute on a freshman Kyle Healy (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Ignatius) header off of a senior Donovan Segree (Kingston, Jamaica/Jamaica College/Daytona State) corner kick.
Armed with some momentum, the Red & Black continued to push forward down the stretch in search of the equalizer. Tries from junior Darryn Commissiong (Pickering, Ontario/St. Mary Catholic) and senior Rex Epps (Irmo, S.C./Dutch Fork/Army West Point) in the 80th and 82nd minutes proved untrue as Xavier escaped Clifton with the victory.
// SCOUTING THE RAIDERS
WSU (1-2) dropped a 2-1 decision at No. 24 West Virginia on Saturday. Midfielder Stefan Rokvic pulled the Raiders within a goal during the 72nd minute. Rokvic leads the team with three goals, while midfielder Deri Corfe has tallied two scores. Goalkeeper Joel Sundell has 19 saves so far in 2019. In the preseason, WSU was picked to win the nine-team Horizon League.
// CONFERENCE WEEKLY HONORS
A pair of Bearcats were recognized by the American Athletic Conference (AAC) Monday afternoon with Healy selected as Rookie of the Week, while junior goalkeeper Noah Lawrence (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Sacred Heart) was picked for the weekly honor roll. Healy scored his first-career goal vs. XU, while Lawrence totaled nine saves last week and leads the league with 12 stops on the year.
// HYLTON'S HOMECOMING
Head coach Hylton Dayes will make his return to his alma mater on Tuesday evening. He enjoyed a distinguished playing career at Wright State from 1982-1985. A four-time all-Mideast, all-Ohio and team MVP selection, Dayes is the only athlete in school history to be named all-American all four years of his career. He also has his jersey retired at the school. Dayes began his coaching career at WSU, serving as the men's assistant in 1986 and the head women's coach from 1987-1994. During his tenure, the Raiders amassed a 64-48-11 slate. A 1988 graduate of Wright State, Dayes compiled a 32-37-8 record in four years as head coach of his alma mater's men's team, highlighted by an 11-7-3 slate and the program's first ever appearance in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference Tournament final in 1998.
