// LAST TIME OUT
UC (3-6-1, 0-1-1 AAC) played the Temple Owls to a 1-1 draw Saturday night at the Temple Sports Complex in its first road American Athletic Conference game of the season.
In a largely defensive battle, Temple got on the board early with a goal during the eighth minute. Looking to make up ground, the Red & Black responded swiftly with junior Mason Volker (St. Leon, Ind./East Central) scoring his first goal of the season with an unassisted score in the 13th minute to bring the score even once more.
Strong defense on both sides kept the score at 1-1 going into the halftime break. In the second period, the Bearcats defense and junior goalkeeper Noah Lawrence (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Sacred Heart) stepped up big, turning away three shots on goal. A late offensive push for the go-ahead goal in regulation by UC proved unsuccessful which pushed the match to overtime.
In the extra periods, the squads traded blows but kept the opposition from ending the match with a golden goal. As such, the defensive slugfest ended in a 1-1 draw.
On the defensive end, Lawrence notched a season-high tying six saves.
// LAWRENCE & COMMISSIONG HONORED
A pair of Bearcats were recognized by the league Monday with Lawrence named AAC Goalkeeper of the Week, while junior forward Darryn Commissiong (Pickering, Ontario/St. Mary Catholic) was picked for the Weekly Honor Roll.
Lawrence notched his first clean sheet of the season with four stops in a 5-0 home win Tuesday vs. Purdue Fort Wayne (PFW). He followed with a season-high-tying six saves in 1-1 OT draw at Temple on Saturday. The junior has 37 saves on the year which is tops in the league.
Also against PFW, UC's offense was paced by Commissiong who dished out an assist and recorded a pair of goals – both within 10 minutes of each other late in the second half – to bring his season total to 12 points. For the season, the junior's goals total (5) ranks sixth in the conference, while his points total is tied for eighth.
The weekly awards mark the third time this year UC has been recognized by the league. Commissiong previously landed on the Honor Roll on Sept. 23, while Lawrence did the same on Sept. 9.
// SCOUTING THE VIKINGS
CSU's (3-3-1, 2-2-0 Horizon) two-match winning streak was snapped Saturday with a 1-0 loss at Green Bay. Goalkeeper Omeed Naeemy totaled three saves in the loss. On the season, the Vikings are led by Gabe Pewu's three goals, while Lawrence Karpeh has added two scores. Naeemy has 22 saves on the year with a pair of shutouts.
// CLEVELAND STATE SERIES
UC leads the all-time series 9-7-1 with victories in the last three meetings. In the last matchup in Cincinnati, the Red & Black picked up a 2-1 win. In the victory, Volker scored his first-career goal. In the most recent overall meeting, the Bearcats blanked the Vikings 2-0 last season in Cleveland.
