CINCINNATI – Junior Clay Amlung (Louisville, Ky./Saint Xavier HS) carded a 1-under 70 Tuesday to lead the University of Cincinnati men's golf team by finishing tied for 13th place at 1-under 72-70-70=212 at the Bearcat Invitational at Coldstream Country Club.

It marks the second event in a row that Amlung has led UC's effort. He tied for seventh at 6-under 206 at the Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational on Sept. 24.

Almung started his final round bogie free on the front nine and climbed to 2-under through 12 holes before bogies on 13 and 16 helped lead to a 1-under finish. For the event, Amlung was never more than 1-over on the scoreboard during the tournament and finished with 11 birdies and posted par or better scores on 44 of 54 holes.

As a team, the Bearcats finished fifth overall at 7-over 287-288-284=859. UC ended up behind first-place Louisville (37-under 272-274-296=815), Arkansas (11-under 281-278-282=841), Kentucky (2-over 290-279-285=854) and Penn State (283-282-290=855).

Along with Amlung, several Bearcats finished the tournament on a high note. Redshirt-sophomore Mason Lenhart (Prospect, Ky./North Oldham HS) climbed six places in the standings after posting a 1-under 70 Tuesday to finish in 18th place at 1-over 72-72-70=214. The effort marked his second career top-20 result. He tied for 16th place at even par 144 in the rain-shortened Jim Rivers Intercollegiate a year ago.

Junior Nicolas Osterburg (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian HS) moved up five spots on the leaderboard Tuesday after rallying from an early deficit to finish at even par 71. He earned his fifth career top-20 finish, tying for 19th at 2-over 72-72-71=215.

Sophomore Sam Jean (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS) and redshirt freshman Jack Kunkel (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview HS) tied for 39th place. Jean was 2-over Tuesday to complete the tournament at 73-74-73=220 while Kunkel was 4-over Tuesday to wrap up the event at 71-74-75=220.

Four Bearcats were playing as individuals, unattached from the team score this week. Freshman Cole Harris (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) led the group, tying for 21st place at 3-over 75-70-71=216 in his first collegiate tournament. Junior transfer Joe McCarthy (Cincinnati, Ohio/DePaul/St. Xavier HS) tied for 37th at 6-over 72-70-77=219 in his first tournament as a Bearcat. Redshirt-junior Andy Mayhew (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood HS) finished 62nd at 13-over 72-76-78=226. Redshirt-sophomore Tommy Sullinger (Sylvania, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit HS), who is also playing in his first college tournament, tied for 63rd position at 14-over 76-74-77=227.

Louisville's John Murphy claimed medalist honors with an amazing 17-under 67-66-63=196 score.

// QUOTING HEAD COACH DOUG MARTIN
On the team performance Tuesday:

"Yesterday, we were consistent throughout the day. Today, we were a little more explosive early. We got it to 7-under par through 10 holes and I really thought we were in a good position. Coming down the stretch, 11 through 18 is very demanding. We weren't able to hold on to 7-under par. I'm proud of what we shot today, but we still have to be able to hold that 7-under round together."

On recent individual performances:
"I think Clay Amlung is starting to get comfortable again after what he did this summer. Mason Lenhart has played very well in the last two weeks. His biggest thing is that he needs to learn how to finish. Sam Jean has been solid. I'm extremely proud of Nick Osterburg battling back after being over par early today."
