CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati men's soccer extended its unbeaten streak to three matches Wednesday night with a 3-2 overtime victory against the Cleveland State Vikings at Gettler Stadium.
Freshman forward Sam Robinson (Oxford, Ohio/Talawanda) scored UC's golden goal in the 92nd minute with a header off of a corner kick from junior midfielder Shevon Stewart (Kingston, Jamaica/St. George's College/Daytona State). The score was the first of Robinson's young career.
With the win, the Bearcats improved to 4-6-1 on the year, while the Vikings dropped to 3-4-1.
The Red & Black went into halftime with a 1-0 lead following a score by senior forward Rex Epps (Irmo, S.C./Dutch Fork/Army West Point) during the 42nd minute. Armed with some momentum, UC struck again early in the second half with senior midfielder Cameron Panley's (Beverly Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) first goal of the season – a rebound off the post from junior forward Darryn Commissiong's (Pickering, Ontario/St. Mary Catholic) strike in the 48th minute.
The Bearcats seemed poised to cruise to victory, but the visitors had other plans. CSU got on the board during the 52nd minute and tied things up in the 66th minute. Both teams charged ahead over the duration of the second half in search of the go-ahead score. With no scoring opportunities truly materializing, the match went into overtime.
UC was aggressive early in the extra period, creating set-piece chances, highlighted by a corner kick that led to the game-winning score in the 92nd minute.
The Bearcats totaled 20 shots on the night, including six on goal. Stewart led the way with five chances, including one on target in the first half. Redshirt freshman Mo Williams (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) contributed three shots, including two opportunities on goal. Commissiong and junior forward Creggton Charlton (Clarendon, Jamaica/Jamaica College/Daytona State each had four shots in the game. Junior goalkeeper Noah Lawrence (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Sacred Heart) recorded five saves, including crucial stops in both halves.
