CINCINNATI - Under clear skies and sunshine, the 2019 University of Cincinnati/Pam Whitehead Invitational came to a close Saturday for the Bearcats' tennis team as UC capped the two-day event at the Trabert-Talbert Tennis Center with a 6-1 singles record to finish with a 14-5 mark. The Bearcats, who competed against players from Bowling Green, Chattanooga and Xavier, finished the event with an 18-10 overall record after going 4-5 in doubles.

With the rainy weather that hampered Friday's action no longer in the area and not a cloud in the sky, the players had a near perfect day to play. Two Bearcats also posted perfect records on the day as Sofia Bruno and Maria Santilli combined to win their doubles match while also winning a singles match. The duo joined forces at #3 doubles against Chattanooga and downed Callie Billman & Grace Ann Dunavant, 6-2. Following the win, both players took to the court in singles play and produced wins. Santilli played at the #4 spot and scored a straight-set victory over Marta Bettinelli (BGSU), 6-1, 6-4. Bruno played at #6 in place of a Xavier player and faced UTC's Caroline Gibbens, winning that match, 6-2, 7-5.

Bruno also was one of three Bearcats that came away from the weekend with 2-0 records in singles play. Along with her win over Gibbens today, Bruno was victorious yesterday in three sets to go 2-0. Joining Bruno was Emma Miceli and Kelli Niehaus. After winning Friday, both came back today with straight-set wins to also post a 2-0 record in singles. Miceli, playing at #3, defeated Ayumi Sasaki (BGSU), 6-1, 7-5, while Niehaus, playing at #6, won 6-1, 6-1 over Maria Jose Majo Magro.

Also posting wins in singles today were Ioana Guna and Alexia Coutino. Guna, playing in the #1 spot, had to battle back to win her match, 1-6, 6-2, 10-6, over Tavpash while Coutino, playing at #3, won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, over Yulia Kapitanova.

The Bearcats will travel to Murfreesboro, Tenn., next week as they will take part in the ITA Ohio Valley Region Championships, Thursday through Monday. The draws for the event will be released Wednesday.
