CINCINNATI - The first day of action at the University of Cincinnati/Pam Whitehead Invitational came to a late close Friday night after action was forced indoors because of rain in the area. Despite the weather, several Bearcats posted solid results on the first day of action including senior Anna Philp, who battled through a third-set tie-breaker in her final match of the day to post a 2-0 record in singles play.
// PHILP IT UP
Philp opened the day with a straight-sets victory over Polina Goloputova (UTC) as she captured the win at #5 singles, 6-2, 7-5. In the nightcap, she moved indoors and battled to a victory over Xavier's Natalie Moyer. After taking the first set, 6-2, she dropped the second, 6-1. In the tie-breaker, she continued to battle back and won, 10-8, to cap a 2-0 day.
// ROOKIES WINNING
All three of the Bearcats' rookies saw action on the day with each posting undefeated results. The duo of Claire Kocsielski & Kelli Niehaus joined forces at #3 doubles and captured a 6-4 victory over BGSU's team of Laura Silveira & Maria Jose Majo Magro. Following the win, both took the courts in singles play against the Musketeers with each winning. Niehaus, playing at #6 singles, scored a 6-2, 6-3 win over Anna Letto while Kocsielski fought to the end to pull out a three-set victory, 7-5, 4-6, 13-11. Fellow freshman Sofia Bruno also played at #6 singles earlier in the day and scored a 1-6, 6-3, 10-7 victory over Lilly Holmes (UTC).

Alexia Coutino and Emma Miceli each posted victories on the day as each won once in singles play as well as combing for a doubles victory. The duo won at #2 doubles, 6-0, over the team of Sasaki & Kapitanova (BGSU). Individually, Miceli won her lone singles match as she rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 victory of UTC's Emma Van Hee. For Coutino, she opened the day at #4 singles with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Callie Billman (UTC) before falling at #2 singles to Hunter Roper (XU), 6-1, 6-4.
Additionally, Maria Santilli grabbed one win of her own as well as she split her two singles matches. She opened the day at #2 singles and took a 6-3, 6-1 win over Bogdana Zaporozhets (UTC) before falling in a battle to XU's Rachael Reichenbach, 6-2, 6-7 (8), 10-5.

The day opened outdoors at the Trabert-Talbert Tennis Center on campus with the Bearcats and Mocs getting their six singles matches in. The Musketeers and Falcons completed three of their singles matches before a second round of showers pushed action indoors at the Western Tennis & Fitness Center in Cincinnati. With the rain looking to move out overnight, action is slated to return to campus Saturday.

The final day of action will take place Saturday and will return to campus and the Trabert-Talbert Tennis Center with first serves set for 11 a.m. Two rounds of doubles will be played before the final round of singles action takes place. The schedule will be the following:
