CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati men's soccer saw its three-match unbeaten streak snapped Saturday with a 2-0 loss to UConn at Gettler Stadium.
With the setback, the Bearcats dropped to 4-7-1 on the season and 0-2-1 in the American Athletic Conference. Meanwhile, the Huskies picked up their first win since Sept. 17 and improved to 4-7-1 on the year and 1-2-0 in the league.
In a physical, defensive bout, the Red & Black fell victim late to a handball call inside their box in the 75th minute which the visitors converted into a penalty-kick score. With time winding down in regulation, UC had its sights set on the equalizer, but a defensive lapse in the 89th minute allowed UConn to increase its lead to 2-0 and ice the match.
The Bearcats were aggressive on the offensive end throughout with 12 shots total, but just weren't able to put points on the board. Junior midfielder Shevon Stewart (Kingston, Jamaica/St. George's College/Daytona State) led the way with three shots, including one on goal. Junior forward Darryn Commissiong (Pickering, Ontario/St. Mary Catholic) added another try on target. Junior goalkeeper Noah Lawrence (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Sacred Heart) continued his stellar play between the pipes with five saves to bring his season total to a conference-leading 47 stops.
