In the only round all teams finished Saturday, University of Cincinnati junior Clay Amlung (Louisville, Ky./Saint Xavier) carded a 6-under par 66 to grab the early lead at the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational at the Steelwood Country Club in Loxley, Ala.
Amlung posted a bogie free first 18 holes with six birdies, including four during his final nine holes to take the lead on the 75-player field. It marked the second time this fall that Amlung posted a career-low 66 score, matching his first-round effort at the Old Town Club Collegiate on Sept. 23.
UC sophomore Sam Jean (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS) finished the opening round tied for 18th place at 1-over 73. Redshirt-sophomore Mason Lenhart (Prospect, Ky./North Oldham) and freshman Cole Harris (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) tied for 42nd position after a 4-over 76. Junior Nicolas Osterburg (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) and junior Joe McCarthy (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier/DePaul) tied for 49th place at 5-over 77. McCarthy is playing the event as an individual, unattached from the Bearcats' team score.
After the opening round, Cincinnati was tied with Kennesaw State at 3-over 291. Mississippi State led the 13-team field at 2-under 286.
Rain delayed portions of the first round, eventually causing four teams to not completely finish second-round play before darkness.
Cincinnati did complete the afternoon round, posting a 6-over 294. When play was halted the Bearcats (9-over 291-294=585) were tied for sixth place with tournament host South Alabama (9-over 301-284=585).
Individually, Jean recorded a 1-under 71 in the second round to climb to even par 73-71=144 for the tournament. A double- and triple-bogey during the afternoon round slowed Amlung's early momentum. He finished the second round with a 7-over 79 to sit 1-over 66-79=145 for the event.
The teams that did not finish play Saturday will tee off at 8:30 a.m. ET on Sunday. Cincinnati will start the final round at 9:50 a.m. ET from the 10th hole. Follow the action at GolfStat.com.
