PHILADELPHIA – University of Cincinnati men's soccer played the Temple Owls to a 1-1 draw Saturday night at the Temple Sports Complex in its first road American Athletic Conference game of the season.
With the result, the Bearcats moved to 3-6-1 overall and 0-1-1 in AAC play. Meanwhile, the Owls ended the night at 3-5-1 on the year and 0-1-1 in the league.
In a largely defensive battle, Temple got on the board early with a goal during the eighth minute. Looking to make up ground, the Red & Black responded swiftly with junior Mason Volker (St. Leon, Ind./East Central) scoring his first goal of the season with an unassisted score in the 13th minute to bring the score even once more.
Strong defense on both sides kept the score at 1-1 going into the halftime break. In the second period, the Bearcats defense and junior goalkeeper Noah Lawrence (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Sacred Heart) stepped up big, turning away three shots on goal. A late offensive push for the go-ahead goal in regulation by UC proved unsuccessful which pushed the match to overtime.
In the extra periods, the squads traded blows but kept the opposition from ending the match with a golden goal. As such, the defensive slugfest ended in a 1-1 draw.
The Red & Black offense was led by three shots apiece from senior defender Donovan Segree (Kingston, Jamaica/Jamaica College/Daytona State) and junior forward Creggton Charlton (Clarendon, Jamaica/Clarendon College/Daytona State). Senior defender Aerin West (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview) had an opportunity on goal that ultimately ended in a team save by Temple. On the defensive end, Lawrence notched a season-high tying six saves.
