SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – University of Cincinnati women's basketball dropped a 69-61 decision Wednesday to the Iowa Hawkeyes at Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez in its first of two games in the Puerto Rico Clasico
The Bearcats (3-3) held a six-point, 42-36 advantage late in the third quarter, but saw the Hawkeyes (4-1) end the period with a 6-0 run to tie the game at 42. Iowa proceeded to score the first three points of the fourth quarter and would later up its lead to as many as 11 points midway through the final stanza. The Red & Black responded to pull within three points, 61-58, with 1:38 left. The Hawkeyes responded quickly, burying back-to-back 3-pointers to essentially ice the game down the stretch.
Junior forward IImar'I Thomas' (Oakland, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep) posted her third double-double of the season with 20 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Bearcats. Senior guard Sam Rodgers (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota East) scored a season-high 14 points – to go along with five rebounds – while senior guard Antoinette Miller (Detroit, Mich./Southfield-Lathrup) chipped in 10 points and five assists. In addition, senior forward Angel Rizor (Zebulon, N.C./East Wake) grabbed a season-best-tying 12 rebounds to go along with seven points.
A competitive game throughout, UC used an early surge to take a 15-10 lead into the second quarter. In the second period, the Hawkeyes answered, outscoring the Red & Black 15-8 to bring the score to 25-23, Iowa, at the half. UC outscored the opposition 19-9 over the first eight minutes of the third quarter to lead 42-36 before Iowa made its final-segment surge.
UC drained a season-high five triples and outrebounded the Hawkeyes, 46-36 -- including 19 second-chance points off of 18 offensive rebounds. In addition, the Bearcats scored 30 points in the paint and dished out 11 assists.
