McCarthy Climbs into Top 20 after Day Two at Kiawah Classic

UC's Joe McCarthy climbed 15 positions into a tie for 19th place at even par 144 during second-round play at the Kiawah Classic.

CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati junior Joe McCarthy (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier/DePaul) climbed 15 positions into a tie for 19th place at even par 73-71=144 Monday during second-round play at the Kiawah Classic at Turtle Point Golf Course. 

McCarthy registered a team-best four birdies Monday as part of a 1-under 71 effort. He has posted par or better scores on 31 of 36 holes since the start of the event.  

Sophomore Sam Jean (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) also moved up the individual standings during the second round, climbing 16 spots following his even par 72 Monday. His second-round scorecard included 16 par scores to go with one birdie and a bogie. Jean, who enters Tuesday's final round tied for 29th at 2-over 74-72=146, is tied with Auburn's C.J. Easley with a tournament-high 28 par scores through 36 holes. 

Like Jean, freshman Cole Harris (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) is tied for 29th place at 2-over 73-73=146. His 2-over 73 second-round results was highlighted by four birdies. 

Junior Clay Amlung (Louisville, Ky./Saint Xavier) is tied for 75th place at 8-over 75-77=152 while redshirt-sophomore Mason Lenhart (Prospect, Ky./North Oldham HS) is tied for 84th place at 10-over 78-76=154.

As a team, the Bearcats slipped three places in the 21-team field into 10th place at 295-292=587. Auburn continues to lead the event at 20-under 274-282=556. 

Auburn's Jovan Rebula maintained his lead in the individual standings at 14-under 64-66=130.

On Cincinnati's second-round performance: 
"We played better today but still were unable to finish off the round. The course played easier as the wind was down from yesterday. We need to be more explosive and play the Par 5s better tomorrow. Joe, Sam and Cole all played solid rounds today."
