University of Cincinnati's Jordan Thompson has made history once again as she became UC's first First Team AVCA All-American, as announced by the American Volleyball Coaches Association on Wednesday.
Thompson was a Third Team All-American in 2018 and honorable mention in 2016. There have been seven other Bearcats players who received All-America honors at one point in their careers, but none higher than Second Team. As a First Team All-American, Thompson is recognized as one of the top 14 players in the country.
The senior was previously named the North Region Player of the Year, also a first in UC program history. Thompson finishes her career ranked seventh all time in NCAA career kills with a total of 2,664. She is the first player in UC history to average more than 5.00 kills per set in her career, ending with a 5.41 kills per set mark, which ranks 13th in the NCAA record book. For the second-straight season, she led the nation in kills, kills per set, points and points per set. Her 6.38 kills per set in 2019 breaks her 2018 UC and American Athletic Conference single-season records. Thompson is the UC and AAC leader in career kills, single-season kills and single-match kills. She became the sixth player in NCAA history to achieve 50 or more kills in a match, doing so on her senior day. She now holds the top two single-season kills and kills per set marks in the NCAA in the 25-point rally scoring era. Thompson is just as successful in the classroom as she was named a CoSIDA Second Team Academic All-American earlier this year.
Thompson led the Bearcats to a historical 2019 season as the team advanced to NCAA Regionals for the first time in program history after a win at No. 6 national seed and AVCA No. 2 ranked Pitt. UC's storied season came to an end in a hard-fought five set match against No. 11 Penn State.
