CINCINNATI – Naji Marshall tied a career-high with 31 points to go with four 3-pointers, eight rebounds and five steals to lead host Xavier to a 73-66 win over Cincinnati in 87th annual Skyline Chili Crosstown Shootout.
Marshall scored seven consecutive points for Xavier (9-1) during a 17-4 run that gave the Musketeers a 16-point second-half lead at 51-35 with 11:55 remaining.
Cincinnati (6-3) was able to trim the deficit to 71-64 on a 3-pointer by Jaevin Cumberland with 24 seconds left. The Bearcats then stole the ball immediately and could have cut Xavier's lead further, but Jaevin Cumberland's 3-point attempt was off line and the Musketeers held on for the victory.
Keith Williams led the Bearcats with 15 points and nine rebounds. He scored eight of UC's first 17 points as the visitors grabbed a 17-13 lead with 10:21 left first half.
Tyrique Jones added 10 points and nine rebounds for Xavier, who won its 10th consecutive home game.
The Bearcats placed five players in double figures. Along with Williams' effort, Jaevin Cumberland finished with 14 points. Jarron Cumberland, who was battling a sore hip from UC's previous game, added 11 points. Chris Vogt reached double figures in scoring for the eighth consecutive contest, contributing 10 points and eight rebounds. Mika Adams-Woods tallied 10 points with a pair of threes, scoring in double figures for the third time in the last four games.
UC committed 17 turnovers in the game that led to 21 Xavier points. The Bearcats won the rebounding battle 41-36, but the Musketeers claimed the edge in points in the paint, 40-32.
