MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Cincinnati women's basketball won its third-consecutive road conference game Wednesday with an 89-69 victory against the Memphis Tigers.
Winners of seven on their last eight games – including back-to-back triumphs – the Bearcats (16-8, 8-3 AAC) completed the regular-season sweep of the Tigers (9-15, 4-7 AAC) behind nine first-half 3-pointers and a 44-35 scoring advantage in the second.
With its highest scoring output of the season, UC featured five double-figure scorers, led by 19 points – including five made 3-pointers – from senior guard Nikira Goings (Marietta, Ga./Osborne). Junior guard Antoinette Miller (Detroit, Mich./Southfield-Lathrup) notched her third double-double of the season with 15 points and a game-high 11 assists. Junior guard Sam Rodgers (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota East), too, added 15 points – featuring four made triples, while fellow junior guard Florence Sifa (Bujumbura, Burundi/Jacksonville College) also chipped in 15 points. In addition, sophomore forward IImar'I Thomas (Oakland, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep) posted 12 points and seven rebounds.
In its first road game of February, the Red & Black used hot first-quarter shooting – including 6-of-7 from 3-point range -- to take a 24-18 advantage into the second. In the following period, UC saw U of M storm back to tie the game at 32 with 4:14 to go before halftime, but the Bearcats answered with a 13-0 run and led 45-34 at the break.
The Red & Black pushed its lead to a then-game-high 17 points midway through the third quarter and continued to forge ahead with a 69-49 advantage going into the final stanza. In the fourth period, the Tigers did not go away lightly, getting within 12 with five minutes remaining. UC subsequently fired back with a 9-0 run to go up 21 with under four minutes left to put the game away.
For the second-straight game, the Bearcats shot the ball better than 50-percent with a 52.5 clip on the night. UC also knocked down a season-high 10 3-pointers and drained 15 free throws. The Red & Black also scored 21 points off of 20 Tigers turnovers and got out in transition for 18 fast-break points. Furthermore, Cincinnati got 38 bench points, scored 32 points in the paint, and dished out 18 assists.
