CINCINNATI – The deep run at the U.S. Amateur by Austin Squires came to a close Friday as the former University of Cincinnati golfer fell short to Cohen Trolio of West Point, Miss., 3 & 1 in quarterfinals action at the Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in the Village of Pinehurst, N.C.
Squires rallied from a two-hole deficit to pull all square with Trolio after 13 holes following a birdie on 12 and an eagle on 13. However, Squires took bogey on the 15th hole and ran into more trouble on the 16th (double bogey) and 17th (bogey) holes, allowing Trolio the room needed to advance to the semifinals.
Despite the result Friday, it was a memorable experience for Squires in his final amateur event. He survived a four-hour, 27-man playoff Wednesday morning to earn the last of three match-play qualifying spots. Later that day, Squires caught the attention of the nation when he took down top-seed Brandon Wu, 2 up.
Squires advanced to the quarterfinals for the second consecutive year Thursday when he defeated two of the world's top-40 players. He outlasted Italy's Stefano Mazzoli, ranked 37th in the world, on the 19th hole in the morning's Round of 32 and held off John Pak of Florida State 2 & 1 in the afternoon's Round of 16.
The back-to-back quarterfinals finishes by Squires are the deepest runs by a Bearcat at the event in school history.
Squires will soon begin a professional golf career after a standout collegiate career. He finished as a two-time NCAA Tournament individual qualifier (2017, 2019), a Haskins Award Watch List nominee (2019), a PING All-Midwest Region Team selection (2019), the 2017 American Athletic Conference Player of the Year, a three-time All-AAC All-league honoree (2017, 2018, 2019), the AAC Men's Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year (2019) and a three-time U.S. Amateur participant (2017, 2018, 2019).
