Longtime UCATS members Wil & Pat Leder were simply avid Bearcats fans looking for a way to give back when they decided to fund an endowed scholarship. Little did they know at the time, their act of generosity in granting a student-athlete his University of Cincinnati education would grow their family by three members.
An endowment allows an individual or family the ability to name and fund a student-athlete's scholarship. The feature that most distinguishes endowed scholarships from other types of donations is that the initial capital invested in the endowed scholarship gift is preserved, so that the gift can last indefinitely, and will continue to benefit a student-athlete each year into perpetuity.
The Leder's endowed scholarship recipient was Tre Scott, a forward on the men's basketball team. Very quickly, they saw a return on investment for their contribution, as Tre grew to become a part of their family. Today, he fits right in among their grandkids, and even calls them "Opa and Grammy."
"They didn't see me as just a basketball player," Tre said, "they really see me for the person that I am. They really care about me."
Over time, the Leder's have become Tre's extended Cincinnati family, and his home away from home. Their gift of scholarship endowment has become their legacy, allowing them not only the opportunity to invest in the successful future of a UC student-athlete, but to form a lasting relationship with the person it benefits. Endowments, and the relationships created through them, truly live on forever.
Though their endowment, they have not only grown close with Tre, but his mother and twin sisters, too. This strong bond led the Leder's to feel compelled to fund an additional endowment that supports Jada and Jadyn Scott on the women's basketball team here at UC. Now, all three siblings compete for the Red & Black, and find themselves with a bonus set of grandparents who attend their games and cheer them on.
Although Tre's senior season with the Bearcats will come to a close in the coming months, the Leder's will be able to continue to support the Scott family as his sisters build their own legacy within the Cincinnati Basketball program.
And, as Tre graduates and receives his UC degree, the Leder's endowment will go to support a new student-athlete, allowing them another opportunity to make an impact, and form a life-long relationship.
"We gave this scholarship, but we truly get so much back in return," said Pat Leder.
