Two University of Cincinnati baseball student-athletes were recognized by the American Athletic Conference on Monday, as Evan Shawver was named the Pitcher of the Week and Jeremy Johnson earned a spot on the Honor Roll.
Shawver had the best outing of his career on Saturday, no-hitting Eastern Michigan through 8.1 innings and tied his career-high with 12 strikeouts in the effort. EMU's first base runner came on a leadoff walk in the sixth, but Shawver followed with a strikeout and two groundouts. The leadoff batter also reached in the eighth on an error. Shawver responded with a groundout, strikeout and flyout. In the ninth, the lefty got a strikeout on three pitches to stay dominant. A walk and base hit followed to break up the no-hitter. However, Shawver faced one more batter, striking him out for his 12th of the day.
Johnson hit .667 in the three-game series sweep of the Eagles, hitting a double, triple and homerun while leading the team with seven RBI. He was a perfect 2-for-2 with a triple and three RBI in game one of Saturday's doubleheader and followed that with two more hits and two RBI, including a homerun, in game two. He continued to swing a hot bat in Sunday's finale, picking up two more hits in three at-bats with a double, two more RBI and two runs scored.
Both awards are the first for the duo this season and are the second and third conference accolades for the Bearcats this year. Griffin Merritt was named to the weekly honor roll last week.
