CINCINNATI – American Athletic Conference Mike Aresco announced Thursday all spring competitions for league schools would be suspended indefinitely due to the novel coronavirus COVID-19.

Additionally, NCAA President Mark Emmert and the Board of Governors canceled the Division I men's and women's 2020 basketball tournaments, as well as all remaining winter and spring NCAA championships.

Both decisions were based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat and the ability to ensure the events do not contribute to spread of the pandemic.

There are currently no confirmed cases of COVID-19 on the University of Cincinnati's campus.

"We know athletics typically serves as a rallying point during times of crisis, but we have to respect the global situation we are dealing with," Director of Athletics John Cunningham said. "The health, safety and well-being of our student-athletes, coaches and staff is my primary concern and the driving force behind the league's announcement."

Cunningham also announced an indefinite suspension of all athletics activities, including practices, recruiting and travel.

"Our community's health and well-being are a priority and we value the continued support of our fans, donors, sponsors and partners as we work through these unique circumstances," Cunningham said. "We will welcome our return to regular activities and competition as soon as it is safe and prudent to do so."

Any patrons who purchased tickets for affected events will be contacted by the athletics ticket office regarding refund information.

Fans should continue to take preventative actions advised by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to help stop the spread of germs, including washing hands frequently – for at least 20 seconds – containing coughs into a tissue or sleeve and staying home if you are sick, especially if you have a respiratory illness, body aches and fever. More information on the novel coronavirus and preventative measures can be found HERE.

This is an extremely fluid situation and guidelines are subject to change. Additional updates regarding UC Athletics events will be published here as they become available. The latest information can also be found by following us on Twitter (@GoBEARCATS).
