CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati Department of Athletics and its Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) recently celebrated Pow6rful Minds week, helping to create awareness around mental health issues faced by student-athletes.
Throughout the week, SAAC put on several events, engaged in a social media campaign and the football team wore green ribbons on its helmets during the Oct. 3 game against USF.
"In my experience, there is more to overcoming adversity than just simply accepting it," Hannah Markel, SAAC Diversity & Inclusion/ONE TEAM Officer said. "It is just as much about accepting the help of people who want to see me succeed. The Pow6rful Minds initiative has been so important in educating student-athletes about mental health and allowing us to feel comfortable speaking up and utilizing resources."
The American and UC's SAAC have helped create awareness to mental health issues and the resources available for student-athletes through the Pow6rful Minds initiative.
The goal of Pow6rful Minds, and a top priority for SAAC, has been to end the stigma related to seeking help and promoting academic and personal success through a healthy, powerful mind.
This year, Pow6rful minds has taken on a new meaning with student-athletes dealing with the stress of Covid-19, social injustice, and other factors. Cincinnati student-athletes came together this past week to support and promote mental health awareness, conversations and resources.
