The latest episode of "Fresh Faces Presented by Kroger" introduces Bearcats Nation to UC women's basketball junior guard Destiny Haymer.
Haymer has transferred to Cincinnati after two seasons at Jones College in Ellisville, Mississippi. The talented guard averaged 11.4 points, 6.8 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 1.2 steals as a sophomore, helping her team to a 24-4 record and a No. 8 seed in the national tournament. A WBCA Two-Year College Coaches' All-American, Haymer was listed as the No. 12 junior college recruit in the 2020 class by All Star Girls Report. In high school, Haymer helped lead Holmes County Central to the 2016 5A state championship and was later tabbed as the 2017-18 Gatorade Mississippi Player of the Year.
Haymer says she there were multiple reasons she decided to become a Bearcat.
"First, it was my talk with Coach (Michelle Clark-Heard)," Haymer said. "Knowing her passion and love for the game has allowed me to connect with her on another level. And then seeing the girls play with their energy and togetherness, I just knew I wanted to be a part of this team."
Coach Clark-Heard praised Haymer's basketball IQ along with her winning attitude when she committed to UC in late November 2019.
And while Division I basketball may be played as a faster pace than the junior college game, Haymer is confident her experience, skillset and attitude will factor into her success this season.
"I can play off the ball," Haymer said. "I can play with the ball in my hands. I think I am really good at creating for myself and for others. And I want to keep developing that and being great at what I do."
"Fresh Faces Presented by Kroger" will spotlight all Cincinnati men's and women's basketball newcomers leading up to the 2020-21 season.
