CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati Department of Athletics and UC community mourn the loss of Dr. Nancy R. Hamant, who passed away this week at the age of 85.

Hamant, a UC associate professor emerita, longtime Faculty Athletics Representative and alumna of the UC College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services (CECH), dedicated her career and her adult life to supporting the University of Cincinnati.

Before retiring in 2007, Hamant spent 43 years preparing UC students for future teaching careers and as coordinator of professional practice and placed thousands of students in teaching positions. Hamant was honored with the UC Alumni Distinguished Service Award in 1982, the UC Foundation Trustee Award in 1998 and was named Faculty Member of the Year in 2001 by the UC Alumni Association. She was awarded UC's Faculty Senate University Service Award in 2006. And in 2010, she was awarded the William Howard Taft Medal, the UC Alumni Association's premier honor.

She served as UC's NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative from 1986-2007. The Nancy Hamant Academics Center, the fifth floor of the Richard E. Lindner Athletics Center, was named in her honor on August 3, 2006 and she was inducted into the UCATS Order of the Black Blazer in 1996 and UC's James P. Kelly Sr. UC Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015.

A deserving female and male student-athlete in their final year of athletic eligibility are annually honored with the Nancy Hamant Scholar-Athlete Award. Winners have excelled in the classroom and are recognized for having the highest cumulative GPA among all graduating student-athletes.

Dr. Joe Luckey, UC's Senior Associate AD/Student-Athlete Support Services, had a personal connection as Hamant was the student-teaching supervisor for both of his parents while they were UC students.

"Dr. Nancy Hamant's influence on the University, department of athletics and the field of education as a whole cannot be measured," Luckey said. "Her presence was found in so many places in her support of student-athlete academics."

Hamant earned three degrees from UC, a bachelor's in Arts & Sciences in 1957, added her master's in Education in 1961 and earned her PhD from the College of Education in 1967.

She joined the UC faculty in 1964 and was an Associate Professor and Coordinator of Professional Experiences in the College of Education. She formerly served as a member of the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee, Athletics Policy and Planning Committee and was a liaison with the NCAA and BIG EAST Conference

A former president of the UC Alumni Association, Hamant chaired UC's We're All UC faculty/staff campaigns in 2005.

Hamant and her husband, Tom, are longtime George Smith Society Members and dedicated season-ticket holders.
