BLUFFTON, S.C. – The University of Cincinnati women's golf team tied for third place at 33-over par 321 Friday during the stroke play portion of the Battle at Old South. The Bearcats earned the fourth seed in the seven-team match play event that starts Saturday at Old South Golf Links.
Junior Angela Lopez led the six UC golfers competing, carding a 4-over 76 to tie for fourth place. She finished five strokes behind Florida International's Carolina Andrade, who posted the only below par round in the 39-player field at 1-under 71.
Other finishes by UC players, included junior Vanessa Manrique tying for 17th place at 8-over 80; Sadie Pan tying for 21st place at 9-over 81; freshman Paighton Masterson and sophomore Erin Evans tying for 28th position at 12-over 84 and freshman Natalia Sompolvorachai taking 33rd place at 15-over 87.
"It was a day that showed a team shaking off the rust from not having played competitive golf in 10 months," UC head coach Janet Carl said. "We are excited to get back out there tomorrow. We talked about adversity today and the team did a decent job but we need to continue to work on being more resilient.
"Players learned a lot about course management in cooler windy conditions," Carl said. "Today was for seeding for match play and the team still stands a good chance to win the event. We will go out tomorrow and see if we can win our first match."
Florida International claimed the top seed and a first-round bye in Saturday's start of team match play. The Panthers posted a 15-over 303 score.
Two rounds of match play begins Saturday morning at 8 a.m. ET. UC will play Charleston Southern in the first round of match play beginning at 8:48 a.m. The final two teams advancing Saturday will compete Sunday to determine the event's winner.
