TicketsBLUFFTON, S.C. – The University of Cincinnati women's golf team spilt its two match-play rounds Saturday in the seven-team Battle at Old South event at Battle at Old South Golf Links.
The Bearcats opened the day dropping their first match to Charleston Southern 3-3 in a playoff before defeating South Carolina-Beaufort 4 & 2 in the afternoon.
UC will face Western Carolina to determine the fifth-place winner on Sunday beginning at 8 a.m. ET. Western Carolina also dropped a 3-3 playoff decision to Jacksonville in the morning round and received a bye to Sunday's matchup with the Bearcats.
"The team played well but it still wasn't enough against Charleston Southern," UC head coach Janet Carl said. "The second round went much better for us."
"Erin Evans and Sadie Pan had key wins in both the morning and afternoon matches with outstanding performances for a total of four wins," Carl said. "We're very proud of the team's effort. We're seeing some improvements and learning what we need to work on to win. We're looking forward to carrying the positive momentum into tomorrow's match."
Florida International and Coastal Carolina will play for championship beginning at 8:48 a.m. Sunday. Jacksonville and Charleston Southern will compete in the third-place match beginning at 8 a.m.
The Bearcats earned the fourth seed in the match-play portion of the event after carding a 33-over par 321 Friday during the stroke play competition.
Junior Angela Lopez led the six UC golfers competing, carding a 4-over 76 to tie for fourth place. She finished five strokes behind Florida International's Carolina Andrade, who posted the only below par round in the 39-player field at 1-under 71.
Other finishes by UC players, included junior Vanessa Manrique tying for 17th place at 8-over 80; Sadie Pan tying for 21st place at 9-over 81; freshman Paighton Masterson and sophomore Erin Evans tying for 28th position at 12-over 84 and freshman Natalia Sompolvorachai taking 33rd place at 15-over 87.
