BLUFFTON, S.C. – The University of Cincinnati women's golf team defeated Western Carolina 4 ½ to 1 ½ Sunday to finish in fifth place in team match-play competition at the Battle at Old South at Old South Golf Links.
UC scored points from five of six players. Junior Vanessa Manrique outlasted WCU's Maya White 2&1. Freshman Sadie Pan pushed past Harper Gilreath 8 & 6. Freshman Paighton Masterson earned a 5 & 4 victory over Cameron Wood. Freshman Natalia Sompolvorachai posted a 5 &4 win over Vanessa Campos. Sophomore Erin Evans halved with Victoria Ladd.
"The team put up a great fight and had solid performance from many players today," UC head coach Janet Carl said. "They are starting to settle down and get back to competition form. We are learning more about them and what we need to do to keep improving.
"Our biggest struggle this event was trying to overcome a year without conditioning and that showed in the last nine holes today," Carl said. "Time to get back to work."
Coastal Carolina won the seven-team event, defeating Florida International 3 ½ to 1 ½ .
The Bearcats split a pair of match play contests Saturday to set up Sunday's matchup with Western Carolina, losing a playoff to Charleston Southern and defeating South Carolina-Beaufort 4 & 2.
