CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati cross country team will travel back to Wichita, Kansas to take part in the American Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2021, at 4 Mile Creek Resort. The meet will kick off at 11 a.m. ET with the women's 6000m, followed by the men's 8,000m at 11:50 a.m. ET.
This marks the second meet for the Bearcats, with both events hosted by Wichita State.
LAST TIME OUT
Cincinnati had a big showing at the JK Gold Classic where the men's team took first while the women's team placed second.
Aaron Bienenfeld took second in the men's 6,000m, crossing the line with a time of 17:45.17, within five seconds of the number-one spot, held by Oklahoma City's Zouhair Talbi, who won the race in 17:40.00.
Alex Sandusky also had a hand in the men's victory at the JK Gold Classic, with a fourth-place finish and a time of 17:58.62.
The women came and showed out claiming three of the top five spots. Ellie Leather, who just a week earlier placed second in 3000m at the McCravy Green Invitational, took second again with a strong time of 17:24.51, just 5.38 seconds off the event winner, Wichita State's Winny Koskei.
The women finished out as follows, Maddie Walker (fourth) and Katrina Patterson (fifth) rounded out the top five while Jodie Pierce was 10th, Lauren Kemper 11th, Leah Maschino 13th, Maggie Breitenstein 15th and Caitlyn Wade placed 18th.
LAST AAC CHAMPIONSHIP
The last time the Bearcats competed in the AAC Championship was back in November of 2019, where the men's team place fourth, and the women's team finished out in the fifth-place spot.
Bienenfeld took home the first-place crown with some additional hardware following his performance in the 8,000m. Bienenfeld completed his triumphant run with a time of 23:43.3, setting both a new course record and personal best. On top of his first-place award, Bienenfeld was also named to the All-Conference team.
On the women's side, Lauren Kemper, Ellie Leather and Hannah Markel all placed within the top-15, including a fifth-place finish for Kemper. All three women set personal best for their respective times as well as being name to the All-Conference team.
By doing so, it marked just the second time UC has seen three women earn all-conference in the same conference meet with the only other coming in 1987. It also is the most since 1999 when two women placed in the Top 15 as well.
