CLEMSON, S.C. – The University of Cincinnati baseball team dropped its season opener at No. 25 Clemson in a 5-0 decision at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Friday.

The Bearcats (0-1) struggled to get the offense going as they were back on the diamond for the first time in 345 days. UC had a pair of hits and stranded three runners on the day.

Clemson (1-0) scored a single run in the fifth, added four in the seventh and got 15 strikeouts from two pitchers, nine from starter Davis Sharpe and six from reliever Mat Clark. Sharpe got the victory while Clark picked up a four-inning save.

Jake Murray picked up his first hit in the red and black as the Northern Kentucky transfer made his UC debut. Ryan Nicholson had the Bearcats other hit.

Evan Shawver got the start and continued his strong performance from 2020, going 4.0 innings, surrendering no runs on four hits with a pair of strikeouts and three walks. He was helped out early by some great defense from the Bearcats as three Clemson baserunners were thrown out over the first three innings.

Nathan Moore took the loss after giving up a run in the fifth on a single up the middle which was just out of the reach of a diving Jace Mercer at second base.

The Tigers added four in the seventh on a three-run homer by Jonathan French and a double to right center by Caden Grice which plated the final run of the game.
