NEW ORLEANS – Tari Eason's offensive rebound and putback layup with 43 seconds left keyed the University of Cincinnati men's basketball team to its second-straight close win, knocking off Tulane, 64-61, Sunday at Devlin Fieldhouse.
Cincinnati (5-7, 3-4 American Athletic Conference) has won three of its last four games - all on the road - and won consecutive games for the first time this season. It was the Bearcats' second game following a 25-day layoff with the roster still limited due to COVID-19 protocols. Tulane (7-7, 2-7 AAC) has dropped five of its last six games.
Eason tied his career high with nine rebounds and scored 13 points on a 6-for-9 shooting day.
David DeJulius rebounded a Tulane miss with 0.9 seconds left and was fouled, leaving his shorts torn in the scrum. He converted both free throws at the other end of the floor and finished in double figures for the third consecutive game, scoring 12 points with seven rebounds and four assists.
Keith Williams led all players with 20 points, his second game of the season with 20 or more in the book. Williams crossed the 1,000-point plateau for his career in the first half, becoming the 54th player in program history to achieve the feat.
The game was a see-saw battle throughout with nine ties and 11 lead changes. The Bearcats committed 16 turnovers in the first 24:11 of the game and only two in the final 16:49.
At one point early in the second half, UC head coach John Brannen turned to his bench and fielded a lineup which consisted of freshmen Tari Eason and Mike Saunders Jr., Mika Adams-Woods and walk-ons Rob Banks and Sam Martin. Banks played in his second-straight game while Martin made his first appearance of the season.
Tulane's Jordan Walker scored all 13 of his points in the second half while teammate Jaylen Forbes led the Green Wave with 15 points.
