BLUFFTON, S.C. – Five University of Cincinnati men's golfers finished in the top 20 led by freshman Ty Gingerich's (Russiaville, Ind./Guerin Catholic HS) second place result at 8-under par 208 to guide the Bearcats to a second-place team finish Tuesday during final-day action at the Oldfield Invitational at Oldfield Golf Club.

The Bearcats carded a 7-under 281 Tuesday to complete the two-day, 54-hole event as one of two squad with a below-par score at 6-under 858. UC finished behind only Virginia Tech (28-under 836) in the eight-team field.

Gingerich's final round featured 17 of 18 holes of par or better scores, including five birdies. Overall, he posted 15 birdies and 34 par scores in his first collegiate event.

Freshman Cole Harris (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS), one of three Bearcats participating in the event as an individual, and junior Joe McCarthy (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier/DePaul) tied for fifth place at 3-under 213. Harris matched Gingerich with a final-round 4-under 68 on Tuesday. McCarthy posted a 2-over 74 over the last 18 holes.

Sophomore Sam Jean (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS) tied for 12th at even par 216 after a third-round 3-under 69.

Junior Clay Amlung (Louisville, Ky./Saint Xavier HS) carded a 2-under 70 in the final round to finish tied for 20th place at 6-over 222.

Redshirt-sophomore Tommy Sullinger (Sylvania, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit HS) tied for 33rd position at 13-over 229.

Like Harris, redshirt-sophomore Mason Lenhart (Prospect, Ky./North Oldham HS) and redshirt freshman Jack Kunkel (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview HS) competed as individuals at the event. Lenhart tied for 25th place at 7-over 223 thanks in part to a second-round 2-under 70 score. Kunkel tied for 46th place at 24-over 240.

The event marked UC's first team competition since the COVID-19 pandemic halted the 2020 spring season following play at the Challenge at Concession event on Mar. 10.

QUOTING HEAD COACH DOUG MARTIN
"We have a lot to take away from this week," UC head coach Doug Martin said. "We came down here to win and didn't get the job done. With that being said we improved each day and executed at a much higher level in the last round than we did in the first two. We showed great grit finishing off the round today after a slow start.

"What a great start to Ty Gingerich's collegiate career. He has committed himself to getting better and has played really well for the past six months. I'm really proud of Cole Harris as well with his development. I have challenged him with his ball striking and stringing together shots and he did a great job of that this week. Joey McCarthy and Sam Jean also had solid weeks."
