BLUFFTON, S.C. – The University of Cincinnati men's golf team is tied with North Alabama for second place at even par 288 following first-round play Monday at the Oldfield Invitational at Oldfield Golf Club.

The Bearcats are 12 strokes behind tournament leader Virginia Tech, who posted a 12-under 276 opening round.

A delay at the start of the event due to frost prevented the completion of the second round. Tuesday's action will include finishing the remaining holes of the second round and entire third-round action.

Freshman Ty Gingerich (Russiaville, Ind./Guerin Catholic HS) posted a team-best 4-under 68 during the opening round thanks to seven birdies and nine par scores. He finished third, four strokes behind tournament leader Daniel Azallion from Virginia Tech, who registered an 8-under 64.

Junior Joe McCarthy (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier/DePaul) completed the first 18 holes one stroke behind Gingerich in fourth place at 3-under 69. His scorecard included 15 holes of par or better scores featuring five birdies and an eagle.

Freshman Cole Harris (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS), one of three Bearcats participating in the event as an individual, put together a 2-under 70 to tie for fifth. His first round included a pair of birdies and an eagle along with 13 par scores.

Sophomore Sam Jean (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS) tied for 21st place at 2-over 74. Junior Clay Amlung (Louisville, Ky./Saint Xavier HS) listed in 35th place at 5-over 77. Redshirt-sophomore Tommy Sullinger (Sylvania, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit HS) tied for 40th at 7-over 79.

Like Harris, redshirt-sophomore Mason Lenhart (Prospect, Ky./North Oldham HS) and redshirt freshman Jack Kunkel (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview HS) are competing as individuals at the event.

Lenhart finished tied for 36th place at 6-over 78 while Kenkel ended the round at 8-over 80, tying for 42nd position.

The event marks UC's first team competition since the COVID-19 pandemic halted the 2020 spring season following play at the Challenge at Concession event on Mar. 10.

Live scoring for Tuesday's resumption of round two and final-round action will be available at GolfStat.com.

QUOTING HEAD COACH DOUG MARTIN
"Overall, today was about some poor execution at key points in the round," UC head coach Doug Martin said. "These mistakes kept us from a really good first round. We shot even par counting four double bogies and a triple bogies. In team golf that just cannot happen.

"I'm really happy for Ty Gingerich today opening his college golf career. Joey McCarthy also did some great things today. Cole Harris played very solid."
