CINCINNATI – A home run by Jake Murray and a pitching gem by LHP Andrew Shawver was the difference as the University of Cincinnati baseball team ran its home winning streak to eight games with a 5-1 win over Western Michigan on Friday.
Murray tattooed the third pitch he saw off the side off Fifth Third Arena, his second home run of the season. The senior transfer also made a highlight-reel catch into the side of the visiting-team bullpen in the ninth inning.
Shawver went 7.0 innings, scattering six hits, no runs or walks and striking out eight. He moved to 2-0 on the season. WMU starter Easton Sikorski took the loss, dropping to 0-1 on the campaign.
UC (4-7) added a run in the fifth on a throwing error from the catcher, scored two in the sixth on a single by Wyatt Stapp and double by Cole Harting and brought in an eighth-inning insurance run on a sacrifice fly by Joe Powell.
The Bearcats finished with 11 hits, including two doubles and a home run, drew three walks and stole a pair of bases.
