CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati baseball team got a pair of home runs and six strong innings from the bullpen on the way to a 7-5 win over Western Michigan in nonconference action at UC Baseball Stadium on Saturday.
The Bearcats (5-7) took the series win over the Broncos (0-5), collecting double-digit hits for the fourth-straight game.
UC took the lead for good on Wyatt Stapp's two-run home run over the right-field fence into Valentine Plaza which narrowly missed hitting the Oscar Robertson statue. Stapp, who had an RBI single in the first inning, finished the game 3-for-3 with a walk.
A triple by Joey Bellini down the right-field line in the bottom of the sixth scored Jace Mercer who had reached on a bunt single. Bellini scored on Ryan Nicholson's sacrifice fly.
Cole Harting added a long ball of his own off the scoreboard in right-center field with two outs and a full count in the seventh to close out the scoring.
Aiden Bradbury (1-0) picked up the win, going 2.2 innings out of the pen, striking out three and giving up two hits, one of which was a pop fly into no-man's land which turned out to be a WMU triple. Max Bergman came on in the ninth to get the final two outs for his first save. All told, the bullpen went six innings, giving up three hits, including a two-run homer, fanning seven and walking two. WMU starter Brady Miller (0-2) was tagged with the loss.
