CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati soccer team scored a goal in the second minute but gave up a pair of second-half scores to Temple, coming up on the short end of a 2-1 decision in American Athletic Conference action on Sunday at Gettler Stadium.
Cincinnati (1-3-0, 1-2-0 AAC) held an 11-7 edge on shots but the teams were even with five shots on goal and three corner kicks apiece. Temple (3-2-1, 1-2-1 AAC) converted a penalty kick early in the second half and then the go-ahead goal in the 76th minute.
Vanessa DiNardo got the Bearcats on the board early, finishing off a nice build up in the second minute. Sophie Gorman fed a leading ball to Maddy Pittman who took it to the end line, turned and passed to DiNardo who slid it past Temple GK Kamryn Stablein for the 1-0 lead, 1:46 into the game. It was DiNardo's first of the campaign.
The game was played mostly in the midfield for a time before both teams had chances in the last nine minutes of the half, but none were converted and UC held the 1-0 edge at the break.
Temple drew a penalty kick in the 46th minute after a foul just inside the top of the box. Lexy Endres scored the equalizer, her first of the season.
DiNardo narrowly missed her second brace of the game in the 63rd minute with a flick on net which was corralled by Stablein. A Temple cross in the 75th minute from Hailey Gutowski to Gabriela Johnson who sent it just out of reach of a diving Anna Rexford for the 2-1 lead.
UC pressed the attack in the final 15 minutes, forcing Stablein to make two saves, but couldn't produce the tying score.
