CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati soccer team battled the elements and the Memphis Tigers Thursday, falling 2-0 in an American Athletic Conference match at Gettler Stadium.
Temperatures were in the 40s with swirling, gusting winds and periods of rain. Cincinnati (1-4, 1-3 AAC) had a number of good chances, but ran into a strong Memphis (5-1, 4-0 AAC) squad who extended its regular-season, league-game winning streak to 16 games, dating back to 2018. The Tigers have yet to allow a goal in four AAC games this season.
Memphis held a 1-0 lead at the half after a goal in the 42nd minute by Kimblerly Smit. Smit's free kick from 10 yards outside of the box caromed through UC GK Anna Rexford's hands and snuck over the line.
UC followed with a pair of chances in the 53rd minute. Kendall Battle poked one at the Memphis net which was picked up by the wind and GK Elizabeth Moberg punched it over the goal and out of bounds. The Bearcats ensuing corner kick ended up on the foot of Ashley Barron who sent it just wide of goal.
The Tigers countered and converted their second goal of the night. Mya Jones sent a through ball to Clarissa Larisey who evaded a diving Rexford aggressively coming off her line, dribbled to the end line, sent it across goal to Lisa Pechersky who buried past two UC defenders it in the upper-right corner for the 2-0 lead.
The Bearcats pushed the attack and had their best chance of the half in the 70th minute. Battle threw it in from the left side to Han Tang who deflected it to Sophie Gorman. Gorman back heeled the ball into space at the top of the box and Taylor Nuncio fired a rocket across goal but a sprawling Mosberg made the save.
Memphis ended up with a 15-8 shot advantage with and 8-2 shots on goal margin. UC committed a season-low four fouls and forced four corner kicks, a season high.
