CINCINNATI – A pair of big innings for Xavier spelled doom for the University of Cincinnati baseball team in a 16-8 loss at Hayden Field on Sunday.

Xavier (5-7) scored 11 runs in the sixth and seventh innings, all with two outs as the Musketeers took advantage of walks, hit batsmen and errors. Cincinnati (7-9) committed three errors in the game and stranded 13 runners.

The Musketeers offensive blast blew open an 8-5 Bearcats lead and gave XU its second victory in the four-game series, which concludes Monday at UC Baseball Stadium.

UC struck first in the third when Wyatt Stapp singled to center field to plate Jace Mercer for the 1-0 lead. XU took a 3-1 lead in the fourth on two of their four home runs on the day.

Mercer hit a long ball of his own in the fifth to score Cole Harting, who was aboard after a leadoff walk. The Bearcats batted around and Mercer's two-out, full-count walk scored Tanner Holen to put UC up 7-5.

XU got two back in the fifth before UC added its eighth run after a hustle play by Jake Murray. Murray reached on a passed ball after a third strike and scored Griffin Merritt.

NOTABLE
• Jackson Murphy (0-1) took the loss for UC while XU's Dorsey Chatham (1-1) picked up the win.

• Mercer finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs, two runs scored, a home run, double and walk.
• Stapp was 2-of-4 with 2 RBIs, two walks and a run scored.
