CINCINNATI – It was a tale of two halves for the University of Cincinnati lacrosse team in a 16-14 loss to Vanderbilt in American Athletic Conference action at Nippert Stadium on Sunday.
The Bearcats (4-4, 0-2 AAC) led 9-4 at halftime but gave up eight-straight goals to Vanderbilt (7-2, 2-2 AAC) to open the second half. UC battled back to knot things up at 14-14 with 8:14 left but wasn't able to find the go-ahead brace. The Commodores scored a pair just over a minute apart to account for the final tally.
VU outdid UC on draw controls in the second half by a 12-6 margin and took advantage of UC turnovers on five-straight possessions which led to scores.
Alyssa Adams and Kylie Nause scored four goals apiece while Monica Borzillo and Gianna Napoletano found the back of the net twice. Sam Mlkvy scored her first of the year on a nifty 360 move in the second half while Lindsey Durkota closed out the scoring tally.
The opening 30 minutes was all Bearcats as Borzillo scored just over three minutes in and following a pair of VU goal, Nasue and Napoletano gave UC its first lead of the day at 3-2. After Vandy knotted it up at 3-3 with 16:27 to go, Adams scored two in-a-row, followed by Nause to go up 7-3. Napoletano and Borzillo each scored their second braces before halftime for the 9-4 edge.
GK Kate Brocato had eight first-half saves and finished the game with 11. VU's Paige Gunning made five saves in the first half, yielded to backup Lexie de Roziere for almost 22 minutes of the second half before returning for the final eight.
