CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati baseball team hit four home runs and eight of the nine players in the lineup had a hit or and RBI in an 8-5 victory over Saint Louis, Saturday at UC Baseball Stadium.
Griffin Merritt had two of the homers while Cole Harting and Wyatt Stapp also cleared the fences on a beautiful sunny afternoon at the ball park..
A three-run sixth inning broke a 3-3 tie after Merritt hit a one-out liner that eked over the fence in right center. Paul Komistek followed with a huge two-out single that scored Jake Murray and Eric Santiago to give UC a 6-3 edge.
UC added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh on a Merritt single to right center which scored Stapp and a Jake Hansen single to right which brought Joey Bellini home.
The Billikens stranded 15 runners on the day and left the bases loaded in both the eighth and ninth innings. Beau Keathley came in with the bags full and one out in the eighth and walked in a batter on a 3-2 count before striking out the next two hitters on five pitches to send the UC dugout into an uproar.
The ninth saw the base paths full of Billikens again after a leadoff single and two walks, but Keathley worked out of it, striking out two looking and inducing a fly ball to center field to end the game.
NOTABLE
• LHP Garrett Schoenle drew the start, threw 5.0 innings and struck out five, giving up three runs on two hits with no walks but did not factor in the decision.
• Merritt was 4-for-4 with a pair of solo home runs, two runs scored and three RBIs.
• Stapp got UC on the board in the first with a two-out solo shot to Sheakley Lawn. He finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, his homer and an RBI.

UC has the series win and will go for the sweep on Sunday with a 1 p.m. ET first pitch on the docket at UC Baseball Stadium. The Bearcats starter will be announced tomorrow, but SLU will throw LHP Trevor Harris (1-2, 3.50). The game will air on ESPN+ with live stats on BearcatStats.com.
