CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati baseball team started things off with a four-run first inning and never looked back, adding on four more in the fifth in a 8-4 win over Saint Louis in nonconference action Friday at UC Baseball Stadium.
Cincinnati evened its record at 9-9 while the Billikens fell to 6-14 on the campaign. The Bearcats belted 12 hits, including four doubles, stole five bases, drew four walks and stranded eight.
UC got on the board after Wyatt Stapp hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to score Cole Harting. After a double steal, Jace Mercer scored on a passed ball and an Eric Santiago single up the middle plated Eric Santiago. Later, Paul Komistek singled through the right side to score Santiago, putting an early four on the line score.
Saint Louis picked up runs in the third and fifth innings on a pair of solo home runs by Jake Garella and it was 4-2 heading to the bottom of the fifth frame.
The Bearcats added to their tally with a Stapp double off the wall, followed by a single from Santiago to put runners on the corner with one out. Griffin Merrit reached on a throwing error and Stapp scored. Merritt took second on a passed ball and following a Tanner Holen walk, Komistek doubled to right field and scored Holen and Merritt. A single by Jake Hansen scored Komistek and UC had a 8-4 lead.
SLU would add single runs in the eighth on its third homer of the game and a one-out single, but relief pitcher Nate Moore was up to the task and finished off the Billikens rally with a pair of fly outs to end the game.
