GULF SHORES, Ala. – The University of Cincinnati men's golf team claimed the team title at the Craft Farms Intercollegiate on Tuesday carding a 1-over par 865 following second-place finishes from junior Joe McCarthy (Cincinnati, Ohio/DePaul/St. Xavier) and freshman Ty Gingerich (Russiaville, Ind./Guerin Catholic HS).
The Bearcats posted a 1-over 289 during the event's final round to complete the 13-team event six strokes ahead of second-place South Alabama, who recorded a 7-over 871.
The result marks UC's first team title since winning the Firestone Invitational on Oct. 4, 2016.
McCarthy climbed eight slots Tuesday behind a final-round 3-under 69 that featured six birdies and nine par scores. In all, he registered par or better on 44 of 54 holes to post his best tournament finish as a Bearcat.
Gingerich completed his final 18 holes at 1-over 73 following three birdies and 12 par scores. He wrapped up the event totaling par or better scores on 47 of 54 holes with 11 birdies for his second runner-up finish this spring. He took second place at the Oldfield Invitational at 6-under 210 on Feb. 9.
McCarthy and Gingerich finished one stroke behind Southern Illinois' Matthis Besard, who claimed medalist honors after posting a 4-under 212.
Two other Bearcats posted Top 25 finishes. Sam Jean (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS) climbing 13 spots after a 1-under 71 Tuesday to finish tied for 15th place at 3-over 219. His final round included a trio of birdies and just two bogies. Clay Amlung (Louisville, Ky./Saint Xavier HS) slipped 11 places to wrap up the event tied for 22nd place 5-over 221 after a 4-over 76 on Tuesday.
UC's Mason Lenhart (Prospect, Ky./North Oldham HS) tied for 45th place at 12-over 228 while Cole Harris (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS), who played the event as an individual, tied for 71st place at 23-over 239.
QUOTING HEAD COACH DOUG MARTIN
"It's really tough to win golf tournaments. This is a tremendous credit to the team bouncing back after a poor performance last week at the Schenkel Invitational," UC head coach Doug Martin said. "It speaks volumes to our culture and the toughness of these kids.
"We fought really hard today and were able to get off to a great start early in the round which really helped," Martin added. "I knew with difficult conditions today holes Nos. 13-16 were going to be a grind and they were.
"I'm really happy for Joey and Ty. This was a complete effort by our team," Martin said.
