WILMINGTON, N.C. – The University of Cincinnati baseball team lost and early lead and dropped the series finale to UNCW on a walk-off home run Sunday in a 9-8 decision at Brooks Field.
The Bearcats (3-7) scored eight runs over the first three innings but succumbed to a late comeback from the Seahawks (7-3). Each team took two wins in the series which featured a lot of offense as UC hit 10 home runs over the four games.
UNCW's Trevor Marsh capped an eight-run rally with his game-winner in the ninth. The Seahawks got three off the Bearcats bullpen in the seventh and loaded the bases on three consecutive walks in the eighth ahead of Noah Bridges grand-slam which knotted things up at 8-8 and set the stage for the ninth.
UC built an 8-0 lead in the first three innings, hitting lead-off homers in each frame. Eric Santiago hit the first pitch of the game over the wall in left field, Joe Powell homered to left center to lead off the second and Cole Harting popped one over the left-center fence to start the third.
The Bearcats totaled nine hits but stranded nine on the bags. Wyatt Stapp led the way with four hits while Jake Murray and Harting picked up two apiece.
Bearcats LHP Garrett Schoenle went five innings, allowing a run on two hits, fanning 11 and walking two. He did not factor in the decision. Zach Segal (0-2) took the loss for UC while UNCW's Adam Smith (2-0) got the win.
SERIES NOTABLES
• UC slugged 10 home runs and tied its 2020 total of 12 long balls 10 games into the 2021 campaign.
• Stapp hit .444 for the series with eight hits, three doubles, eight RBI and two runs scored.
• Harting had six hits and two home runs, slugging at a .867 clip over the four games.
• Powell had three homers, four RBI and 12 total bases, hitting .300 for the weekend.
