SEA ISLAND, GA. – University of Cincinnati men's golfers Sam Jean and Clay Amlung rank in the Top 10 with the team in eighth place after 36 holes at the Spartan Collegiate at Sea Island hosted by Michigan State in Sea Island, Georgia.
Sixteen teams are competing in the two-day, 54-hole event on the Plantation Course.
Jean fired a first-round 74 and a second-round 67 for a first-day total of 3-under par 141, two shots behind the tournament leader Andrew O'Leary of Notre Dame, who carded a 5-under 139 on Monday.
Amlung shot matching 1-under 71s for a 142, tying for seventh, three strokes off the lead.
Joey McCarthy (72-73) is tied for 27th, Ty Gingerich (75-77) is in a tie for 60th and Cole Harris (77-84) is placed 77th.
The team's 36-hole total of 580 is tied with Indiana in eighth, 10 shots off the lead shared by Notre Dame and the host Spartans.
QUOTING COACH MARTIN
"We played in spurts today like I expect of this team," UC head coach Doug Martin said. "Unfortunately, we made too many mistakes at very key times. Anytime in team golf you are forced to count 6 doubles and a quad the end result is no indication of how the team played for the entire round. Those seven holes hurt our chances to win this golf tournament tomorrow.
"We are growing and learning as a group. Tomorrow will be a great challenge and I look forward to watching this group compete. Extremely excited for Clay and Sam. They both are growing and learning and understanding how to compete at this level."
