CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati baseball team used a six-run fourth inning to get back in the game but was not able to hold on in an 8-6 loss to UCF in an American Athletic Conference series opener, Friday at UC Baseball Stadium.

Trailing 5-0 headed into the bottom of the fourth, Cincinnati (11-15, 0-5 AAC) belted three dingers and scored six runs to take a 6-5 lead. Griffin Merritt hit a liner of the fence in right to score Paul Komistek who drew a leadoff walk. Eric Santiago made it back-to-back jacks with his solo laser over the wall in left center.

Joe Powell hit a one-out double to right center and Cole Harting followed with a shot onto Sheakley Lawn to score Powell. Jace Mercer scored the final run of the inning after being hit by a pitch, advancing on a single by Joey Bellini and then scoring on a Jake Hansen single to left center.

UCF (13-16, 3-2 AAC) got three back in the fifth after a leadoff triple, RBI groundout, run-scoring double and a two-out single.

The Bearcats had their best comeback opportunity in the bottom of the sixth with runners on second and third with two outs, but the rally was snuffed out by a ground out. Overall, UC stranded 10 runners in the game.

UC's chances were buoyed by the relief pitching performance of Nathan Moore. He went 4.1 innings, scattering three hits and didn't give up a run, striking out three.

The Knights' Billy McKay (1-1) took the win while UC starter Zach Segal (1-3) had the loss.
