CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati tennis team returns to Trabert-Talbert Tennis Center Sunday afternoon to face off against Western Kentucky University at 1 p.m. for its final match of the regular season.
Coming off their second straight win, the Bearcats are looking to cap off the season on a win streak before entering post season competition at the AAC Championships in Lake Nona, Fla.
LAST TIME OUT
AAC Women's Tennis player of the week, Ioana Guna, clenched a 4-3 victory for the Bearcats on a 7-6(7) third-set stunner against Marshall University last Sunday afternoon.
Guna rallied after dropping the first set 6-1 to start the match. She quickly answered, nipping out a 6-7(3) second set victory, bringing it down to a final third set decision where she was able to put away a 7-6(7) victory, securing the match for the Bearcats.
Setting up Guna for the Bearcats victory was Kelli Niehaus who forced a third set of her own to keep UC alive late in the match. Niehaus fell short in the first set, 4-6 but battled her way through the second, putting up a 6-3 victory. She remained steadfast through the remainder of the match, claiming the third set victory 7-5.
QUEST FOR 500
Cincinnati is currently sitting at 499 total program wins as it enters its final contest of the season. With one remaining regular season match and a showing at the AAC Championship, the Bearcats have the ability to close out the season on a 500-win milestone for the program.
SERIES HISTORY
The Bearcats and the Lady Toppers have met just one time back in 2018 where WKU edged out a 4-3 win over the Bearcats. UC looks to even the books and keep its momentum against the Lady Toppers, who are 6-12 this season and coming off a two win streak of their own.
