CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati tennis program is slated for the American Athletic Conference Championship this Thursday, April 22, and continuing through Sunday, April 25, for the final. The Bearcats are seeded ninth in the AAC and will compete in the First round of the championship on Thursday, April 22 against No. 8-seeded USF at 9 a.m. ET at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.
Following the release of the initial bracket, the University of Cincinnati was set to compete against No. 7-seeded Wichita State, who earned an instant bye to the Quarterfinals after Temple withdrew from the championship due to COVID-19 related issues within the program.
The new bracket will have just one first-round match on Thursday instead of the initial two game series and will be set against No. 9 seeded Cincinnati and No. 8-seeded USF with live streaming available on ESPN+.
THE STREAK CONTINUES
Cincinnati capped of its regular season finale on a three-win streak this past Sunday afternoon at the Trabert-Talbert Tennis Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. Cassie McLay awarded the Bearcats a 4-3 victory after clenching a third set stunner over Western Kentucky University, claiming the program's 500th all-time win.
The Bearcats found their stride as they entered final stretch of the season, claiming four of their final five matches. Cincinnati looks to hold onto this newfound momentum as it enters competition against the Bulls Thursday morning at the AAC Championship. With a chip on their shoulder, the No. 9-seeded Bearcats have a lot of ground to cover in order to make it to Championship Finals on Sunday.
Previously scheduled for the 2019-20 season, the Bearcats and the Bulls had their most recent matchup canceled at the start of the pandemic over a year ago due to proactive protocols surrounding COVID-19. Before that, the two teams had met a total of five times in series history with the USF holding a 5-0 series advantage over the Bearcats. With a win Thursday morning, the Bearcats will earn their first win over conference rival USF and project them onto a four-win streak.
The Bulls have lost four straight matches as they enter this year's AAC championship. All four losses have come from four nationally ranked teams, including the AAC's No. 46 Tulsa and No. 18 UCF, who both will be competing later this weekend. AAC ranked No. 1 UCF awaits the winner of the UC vs. USF match up. The winner will face the Golden Knights Friday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. ET.
