CINCINNATI – Garrett Schoenle had his longest outing since March 2019 and the University of Cincinnati baseball team opened a weekend series against Wichita State with a 6-0 win on Friday afternoon at UC Baseball Stadium.
Cole Harting led the game off with a triple and scored on Jace Mercer's RBI single to give UC a lead it wouldn't relinquish.
The Bearcats (17-17, 6-7 AAC) plated three runs in the sixth after Ryan Nicholson hammered one over the fence in right field to score Eric Santiago and Paul Komistek.
Mercer led off the eighth with a solo shot to right and the Joey Bellini scored on a RBI fielder's choice from Nicholson.
Schoenle's 8.0 innings pitched was the second-longest start of his career and longest since going 8.1 innings in a win at USF on March 24, 2019. On Friday, he moved to 4-1 on the year, threw 121 pitches, scattered four hits with two walks while striking out nine and not surrendering an extra-base hit. He notched his 150th career strikeout in the game and has totaled 152 K's over his UC career.
The UC defense turned a pair of double plays to help the starter out and Jackson Murphy struck out two in the ninth to seal the win.
