GREENVILLE, N.C. – The University of Cincinnati baseball team held an early lead, but No. 11 East Carolina scored 11 runs in the fourth and fifth innings on the way to a 13-3 win in seven innings in game one of a Saturday American Athletic Conference doubleheader at Clark-Leclair Stadium.
A new 2021 AAC rule ends games after seven innings if a team leads by 10 runs or more.
UC (10-12, 0-3 AAC) had runners on base in every inning but stranded 12 in the game. ECU (21-5, 3-0 AAC) drew nine walks and Ryley Johnson's fifth-inning grand-slam on the first pitch he saw blew things open to help cap a seven-run inning.
Cincinnati jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning after a Joe Powell single to left field scored Eric Santiago and Paul Komistek. Powell later scored on Jace Mercer's two-out double down the left field line.
The Pirates pitching staff locked down from there, allowing only three hits over the final five innings as only one UC base runner advanced to third.
C.J. Mayhue (2-1) picked up the win while UC receiver Max Bergmann (0-1) took the loss.
