GREENVILLE, N.C. – The University of Cincinnati baseball team struggled to get the offense going and ran into a strong pitching staff from No. 11 East Carolina in a 2-0 loss in an American Athletic Conference series finale on Saturday at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
UC hurler Garrett Schoenle (1-1) scattered three hits over the first four innings before running into trouble in the fourth. The Pirates plated two runs on singles to pick up the early lead. Schoenle took the loss, going five innings with the two runs scoring on seven hits. He walked one and struck out six during his 90-pitch outing. Jackson Murphy and Beau Keathley combined for three innings of scoreless relief.
The Bearcats (10-13, 0-4 AAC) had two runners on to start the fifth but after an ECU pitching change, reliever Cam Colmore struck out the side. UC again had two runners on in the sixth but Colmore struck out the final two UC batters to end the threat.
Three ECU pitchers combined on the shutout. Colmore (3-0) got the win and C.J. Mayhue picked up his fifth save of the season as the pair struck out 11 UC batters over their five innings of work.
Mercer and Ryan Nicholson both finished 2-for-4 while Paul Komistek and Eric Santiago picking up hits as well.
