CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati baseball team suffered an 8-4 loss in the first game of a Friday doubleheader in American Athletic Conference action at UC Baseball Stadium.
Cincinnati (24-22, 13-12 AAC) had tied things up at 2-2 in the bottom of the first, but the Pirates (34-10, 16-5 AAC) hit their way to five runs in the second and hung on late as UC rallied with two runs and two men on with a pair of outs in the bottom of the ninth.
Starter Garrett Schoenle (5-3) had his shortest outing of the season, giving up seven runs, but only four earned, on seven hits in the loss. Max Bergmann came on in relief and gave up five hits and a single run in 6.0 innings, his longest career outing.
ECU's Gavin Williams gave up the two early runs and settled down, striking out eight in 6.0 innings of work. He moved ot 8-0 on the season.
